- Program Notes
- In October of 2022, I took up knitting as a hobby to center myself and drown out the exceedingly loud voices of responsibility impeding my mental health. Common Thread is the first piece I composed completely while being a knitter and is intended to communicate both the processes of knitting and the perception of time in music; the repetition, recollection, and distraction. Most of the work is colored by this relationship, however, there is a slow, lush, section that is when the meditative state of knitting reaches nirvana, as it were. Common Thread refers to the moto perpetuo of sixteenth notes passed around constantly throughout the work, and the use of this stream of sixteenths to delineate sections in the form of common tone modulations, though not in the strictly tonal sense. Common Thread is dedicated to Isaac Smith and the Ascension Brass Quintet.
