- Different Bodies was graciously commissioned by Bill Ryan and the Grand Valley State University Ensemble and is a celebration of Lake Michigan. The title Different Bodies comes from the stark differences in my personal experience with bodies of water in my home state of Florida and my second home of Chicago, Illinois. In Chicago, Lake Michigan is generally referred to as the beach and is beautifully crowded with people escaping the polluted and grey city life. My experience with Lake Michigan from this perspective is overwhelmingly positive, it became the beach experience I never had growing up in Florida. While I can't claim all of my beach experiences were negative in Florida, they never met me with the breathtaking vastness and creative spark that the figurative warmth of Lake Michigans beach. Different Bodies journals my experience from the perspective of multiple bodies of water, the Atlantic, Gulf and Lake Michigan. It is my hope that in listening and performing, one can embody these experience and have a greater understanding for the impact this magnificent body has to offer.
