- Bad Friend embodies the process of dissolving a friendship against ones will. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had begun my doctorate at a new university, lived in a studio apartment seeing no one but my cat for months in an unknown town. Following this move, I relocated to live with my dad for some sense of normalcy. In moving alone, I blew out my back, laying in agony overnight on a concrete floor with no insulation, writhing in pain during a Midwest winter night. After my hospitalization, I came back home, and in the next two weeks, would lose my cat to a driver who left him to die. I say this to say that I needed my friend, but he wasn’t there for me. Of all the trials and tribulations during those awful thirteen months, losing a friend has felt the worst.
