The title Approaching Noise comes from the idea that as one goes higher into a spectrum, the human ear begins to hear the partials as noise because of the anatomical limitations. The title also refers to the inaccuracy of a piano in approaching a harmonic series, being that beyond the fourteenth partial, all partials are half steps, repeating as the pitches get closer together. In this analysis I will be pointing to the methodologies I used, the spectral techniques I mentioned, and the techniques I associate more with my own music to show the possibilities of a spectral impression on my temporal and timbral language.
