- Cast Off was writen for my friend and fabulous pianist, Francesco Granata as a concert opener for his final solo recital in the U.S. before departing back to Europe after his artist diploma. I too was finishing my doctoral coursework so I would also be leaving the area where we met. I had begun my journey into knitting only a few months before writing this, so I was inspired to use the term "cast off" referring to process of securly removing live stitches from your needles so that they can be stable fabric. This is something you do at the end of your knitting so that your stitches don't unravel. Cast Off symbolizes this exciting process, of leaving the saftey of academia to pursue the unknown, with all its chaos and beauty.
